I use VPI as do a lot of other people here but if you do a search for pet insurance, you will find a few other companies. I think VPI is the most popular though.

I don't think that your dog has to be AKC registered or a purebred to be insured with the AKC health plan. They accept all dogs They also offer a free 60-day trial plan for newly registered AKC puppies (it must be activated within 28 days of registration).

I also ran across the ASPCA's pet insurance plan and it doesn't look too bad. There's only a $100 annual deductible (compared to VPI's deductible of $50/per incident) and it has a wide range of plan choices from basic accident insurance to full premium coverage for things such as spaying/neutering and long-term illnesses. VPI does offer a higher reinbursement rate (90%) compared to ASPCA (80%), but I guess it just depends on what's more important to you. The monthly premium amounts seem to be similar.

There are so many choices out there, you just have to decide which one best suits your particular needs. Unfortunately, a lot of these plans don't cover hereditary conditions or those that are predisposed in the breed. Some of the more premium plans will, however, cover some pre-existing conditions. I guess every little bit helps.

Good luck!
