I went to the dog park this weekend and when we got into the park, Lambeau goes running over to all the dogs. Immediately, one of the owners tells me that I need to watch my dog because his dog "doesn't like boxers." Okay, for starters, if his dog doesn't like a certain breed, he probably shouldn't take his dog to the park where that breed of dog may very well show up to and HE should watch HIS dog....I watch Lambeau constantly anyway, but I feel like he should watch his dog to make sure he doesn't attack my dog as well...AND is it really possible for a dog to not like a certain breed as a whole? I mean, maybe it really is, it just seems odd to me. What do you guys think? By the way, his dog just growled at Lambeau when he came around, nothing else happened. I kept my eyes on him!!!

So, after all that, do you think a dog can not like another breed as a whole?

I don't know for sure but I have had one experience.

The owners at the doggy daycare I take Duke to have 2 great danes that they bring to the daycare and an 8 year old boxer that they leave at home because he gets to overwhelmed. One of the great danes kept growling at Duke and only Duke...it could have been because it was Duke's first day. But the owner said that that dog will do that to their boxer too! She said the great dane will get the toys and stand right in front of their boxer teasing it and growling.

Maybe the other dogs don't like our boxers playing style. I have noticed that Duke really does "box" the other dogs with his paws, not in an aggressive way but rather playful. Other dogs may not like this, or rather maybe the other owners don't like it!

This is just my opinion and only experience with it. I have heard that certain breeds will play together and seek eachother out more than other breeds!?!

I will be interested in seeing what other peoples take on it is.

Some breeds/dogs do not care for the in-your face style behavior of a Boxer. I know of several dogs, personally, that do not care for Tae and have snarled at her when she's tried to jump up and box them. So, yes, it is possible for a breed to dislike another breed. I have learned that some breeds, such as Goldens and Labs are quite tolerant and make good playmates for Boxers.

Well, my dog is the opposite, Titan doesn't like dogs that aren't boxers. He just snubs his nose and looks the other way as if to ignore them. But if he sees a boxer then watch out he wants to run right to them and start playing. I find this a bit odd, but hey, if he wants to be picky about his friends that's fine with me--least his friends will all be cute boxer babies!! ha ha

I don't know if it's coincidence, but we've met three chesapeake bay retrievers that don't like Willis. I think maybe they don't like the boxy style of play or maybe there's something about their communication style??? Who knows? But all three times we've met a chessie (one of whom belongs to a close friend of mine and is a very sweet natured dog who generally likes other dogs) they do NOT like Willis. Sounds weird I know...

Nina seems to love all breeds...so far...she is only 18 weeks.
What i find fascinating is a sence she has on how to play with certain breeds and age of the dog.
She paws and boxes with my neighbours terrier and he loves it....but when she met a 5 year old lab who has arthritis...she was so very gentle with him.
My hubbie says it was his size...but i think she just knew that he was sick and just wanted to give him kisses.....i was so shocked she did not paw him i had to pick my jaw off the floor..LOL
So far she loves all that approach...except for the little yappers that go for her ankles..LOL

Thanks for all your replies so far...it's interesting to me. I guess it's like when we go to the park and there are lots of boxers and they congregate together...I guess if they can like there own breed more than others, then why couldn't they not like another breed. Also, we know how very intuitive our boxers are, I'm sure other dogs can make choices about what they like and don't like as well. :)

And it is true, they do have a style of play unlike any other dog!! Maybe other dogs don't like that!

I disagree about ALL labs being tolerant and good playmates for boxers. Zeke, my lab (I don't own a boxer), will get into a fight if a dog jumps on him...he likes to be introduces first, and will not play rough until he really feals he knows the other dog. But he is a bit odd.

I agree about some dogs not liking the boxer style, in Petsmart I saw a boxer pup (no bigger than maybe 15in) trying to play with a cockapoo...it got snapped at when it landed on the cockapoo's head.

My mix, Reuben also doesn't are for ruff and tumble.

My other mix, Lucy, doesn't play with other dogs as she thinks she is a human.

I forgot to add that many dogs can't interpret a boxers intentions. Upright ears is a sign of dominance/aggression, a dog with cropped ears ALWAYS looks dominant or agressive to other dogs. Boxer's lack of a tail is another way signals get crossed, the position of the tail can tell a world about what the other dog is thinking.

Actually, it is possible. There is a pitbull at the dog park who does not like this bulldog puppy I walk. He has to be put on leash every time Champ(bulldog) is around. Owners said he was attacked one time by a bulldog and therefore holds his grudges towards all of them. Champ is full of nothing but love, so once Teamo realized that, it doesn't bother him anymore and the leash is not used.
It is HOWEVER, the owner of that other dog to take responsibility of his dog if he knows his dog has issues with another breed. HANDS DOWN it is his responsibility.
Better luck with that guy..
