Boxer Pal
I have a 1 YO boxer that I rescued and just adore but I have two habits I am trying to break. As soon as I sit down on my sofa......he barks at me until I play with him. He never gets enough play-time. I know that boxers are high energy dogs but I would love to have just one hour a day to relax and watch tv. If I get up off the sofa he tries to jump on me and continues to bark. If anyone has any suggestions I would most appreciate some input. :-D

First off, if you aren't already, you need to take your boxer to obedience class. Boxers usually need lots of obedience training to make them into really well behaved dogs.

Teach your dog the command "off" Whenever he bugs you wanting you to play put him in a down stay. Playtime should be your idea not his. Whenever he wants to play make him wait 10 minutes and then initiate the play.

Try using a squirt gun or a spray bottle and spray him when he is being bad. Aim for the cheek area, just make sure that you miss the eyes. It doesn't work with all dogs, but it sure worked well with my boxer.

Be consistent with your training, don't allow him to jump up sometimes and not others. Reinforce your alpha position in your household by the following: You always eat first. You go through doorways first and do not allow your boxer on the furniture or on the bed. Make sure that it is you that initiates walks and playtime.

Good luck,

I'm going to move this topic to the training forum. Please come back here and tell us more about you and your boxer. What is his name? How long have your had him etc.
