Well, as of this past Tuesday morning, I no longer have a job :( I was laid off by the company that i work for. Reason being they "elimiated my position", there will be no recall, and i get a paid holiday, which is the only thing that is good. So now what?....well i am going to finish up my Associate's degree in Cadd, and i get to claim unemployment while i am doing it. I feel like a drain on the economy claiming unemploymet, but, there is not a job market in what i do in my immediate area, unless i choose to travel to Allentown (1hr drive + go to school, i think not)

So if you dont see me post for a while, you all know why. I will hopefully be getting a new computer soon, when my income tax return comes in, so when that happens, i will be halfway done with my last semster of college, and will start looking for a new job.

Best wishes and a safe Holiday for all.

Melanie

I'm so sorry to hear that. So close to Christmas too :( Don't feel so bad about unemployment, I believe school is more important! Is there another computer to come check in on?

Bad news for us too. My husband found out he too will be laid off. He is off for a month
at Christmas, returns to work for 3 weeks, then is laid off indefinatly. The company that purchased his company is moving it out of the country within the next two years. So it means he will not be returning to work. What an awful time of the year to be laid off. It sure takes the spirit out of Christmas. Best of luck to you. We know what you are going through.

Thank-you Jean and Badass, I appriciate it, yes i do have another computer i can check in on, but it will be very rare. Why do they pick such a wonderful time of year to do such a horrible thing?
What a way to spend christmas huh?

I'm so sorry to hear about that. It's a rough one but unfortunately it's way too common now. It sounds corny, I know, but I really think better things will come along. Keep your chin up. We'll be thinking of you. And, hey, I'd rather my tax dollars go to someone like you than some other things!!

Melanie, I am so sorry about your job. I hope Tracy is right and something better will come out of it.

Jean, I really sorry about your husbands job too. What a rotten time of year for these things to happen.

Take care,

Hi Melanie
Me again. My husband and I have made a deal that we will not mention the phrase laid off or job, until Christmas is over. Since we heard the news, we became so absorbed with the fact that there is no job left, that it was taking over our ability to try and enjoy the Christmas season. We too are hoping that there is something better out there for him, and it is possible we may have to consider a relocation, moving us away from our families. But for now we know that yes there is unemployment insurance, but in Ontario it only lasts for 35 weeks. So for now we are going to have a great Christmas season, and deal with the rest afterwards. Keep your chin up!!! Like I said, we know how you feel

I am so sorry to hear about your losing your job. What I wonder is do these companies deliberatley wait until the holidays to lay people off. My husband was laid off in December last year, his company used Tucson to build up their business in the east coast, when they had everything under control they let them all go. I don't know if I should say this or not, but my husband was lucky enough to get transferred in to another field in this company, part of the severence was 6 months of pay until he found a new job, because noone realized he had transferred within the company we kept receiving weekly paychecks from the job he was laid off from, plus wages from his new job. We tried to do the right thing and get the checks to stop, and find out how to go about giving the money back but noone had any record of the checks being issued. After a large amount of money later, the checks stopped, and noone wanted the money back, we ended up banking it, then later on getting a bit ahead on bills with it. It has been over a year now, and i hope I didn't just jinx myself.

Way to go JoAnn!! I'm happy to hear that you tried to do the right thing by returning the money, but you know it is also nice to hear that someone got a little bit extra from a company that was closing. This is the second time in 10 years we have been faced with this and yes at Christmas Time. The last company my husband worked for, a factory that had also been around for years and years, closed and moved out of the country. What gets me is that they do not even offer to transfer anyone with the company, except of course the president of the company.
