Hey guys, I am getting really depressed and frustrated here and am hoping I can get some advice. Sorry this is going to be long.

My Boxer Wilson has had problems with his right front leg since March, when he first started limping. After a couple months of the vet telling me it was a sprain and to let him rest (yeah okay, try making a Boxer take it easy), I finally decided to do some x-rays to see if it was something more serious. The x-rays showed nothing and they decided he probably had a tendon/muscle/ligament strain and it was going to take several months to heal. They put him on an anti-inflammatory.

After a couple months of pretty much no improvement, I decided to go to an orthopedic specialist, who confirmed that he has tendonitis. It wasn't serious enough to require surgery, but they said he needed physical therapy.

It's been almost 3 months now - he's had ultrasounds, aquapuncture (similar to acupuncture only they inject a liquid into his pressure points that aids in healing) and has even done hydrotherapy. He's also been on a supplement called ligaplex AND has continued taking the anti-inflammatory.

It seemed like he was getting better, his range of motion was greatly improved. However 2 weeks ago I noticed his gait seemed more unbalanced than usual, and when I went to the vet she could hardly extend his leg and said something must have happened to worsen his condition.

We have been trying so hard to keep him calm, and it's been extremely difficult to ignore him and tell him "NO" every time he gets excited. We walk him 3 times a day, for only 10 mins at a time spread out which is what the vet suggested.

My husband and I are at our wits end because we have spent nearly $2000 so far (in just 3 months), and we really can't afford to continue any longer. He should have been healed by now. I am extremely depressed about it, and I know it's really affected Wilson also as he mopes about most of the time (he gets bored with chewing stuff).

We were very active before this, went to the dog park all the time, long walks, play dates....now all he has are these short walks and no interaction with other dogs at all. If we try to play in the house he gets super excited and starts jumping/running around and then we have to stop. We can't even let him off leash in the yard anymore because he can't be trusted to not run/jump.

I don't know what to do anymore, I need to figure out how we can get Wilson healed without spending more insane amounts of money (just a visit with the specialist is between $35 -$70, depending on how thorough the examination is; hydro, ultrasound and aquapuncture each cost around $45. That's a lot in a week...and we were going in every 5 days). We just can't afford all the expensive therapy anymore. And if we can't go in atleast once or twice a week it really isn't worth it.

I feel so awful, all I want is to make him get better. If there is one prayer God could answer for me, this is it.

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions/advice for me?

It must be so frustrating having to keep Wilson confined, for all of yousmashicon
Is there any swimming pool you could take Wilson to for exercise,it would be no impact on his joints, also maybe less expensive than "hydrotherapy"?
Do you have any friends with a heated pool you could borrow?
Anyway, don't know if these ideas help or not, hugs for Wilson from us:)

I am so sorry to hear about Wilson. I understand completely how frustrating and depressing it can be to live with health issues that are so long and drawn out (not to mention expensive!), with seemingly no end in sight. I have no input regarding Wilson's particular condition, sorry, but certainly hope that soon there will start to be some improvement. Sending loads of healing vibes for Wilson. Hang in there! And let us know how he's doing.

Ah, try massaging his leg. Tendonitis is most often due to overworked/overfatigued muscles. You mentioned that he's had injections to aid the healing process, but if the muscles continually are overworked(he has to move to do everything and there is NO keeping him down) then there will still be inflammation. You need to treat the problem and not the symptom(tendonitis is the symptom). Try touching the muscles in the leg, if response is good, then proceed. You can vary your pressure by gauging the dog's reaction. Think of it like kneading dough or kind of like a squeezing(compress the muscle in your hand-like you are squeezing your fingers against your palm, except it won't be your palm, but the dog's leg. I would work all the way up, and remember to go towards the heart, this helps circulation. Also, gently rubbing from paw to chest(I assume it's a front leg) this will aid circulation as well. You want to see if ice or cold on affected are helps(this will take down swelling). Don't overwork the areas, as this will take you 3 steps back and not forward. I would just go for a couple of minutes or until you feel the muscles relax, but no more than like 5 minutes. Sorry so long. Good luck!!

Tendonitis can take a long time to get better. I recently had tendonitis in my thumbs and it took four months before they actually got better. I thought they would never heal. :( Tendonitis can just take a long time. You probably just need to be patient.

I would give Wilson as little exercise as possible. Maybe get him some raw meaty bones to keep in occupied. Working at the bones will tire him out. :)

Good luck

Hey guys I just wanted to say thank you for the words of encouragement and the suggestions. I am going to try out those massage techniques on Wilson. My only worry is that I can somehow make it worse if I don't know what I am doing. The good thing is that I am going into the physical therapy field and this week we start our soft tissue training (how to massage etc), so that should help me get a better understanding.

I did some research last night to see if there are better supplements out there I can give him and I am going to start giving him fish oil and a supplement called Flexicose. If anyone has heard of it and knows if it really does help let me know! From what I am reading it's an awesome product, with a high dose of glucosamine and chondroitin.

Thanks again, I guess I just have to keep my chin up and have more patience.
