Weileys

Boxer Buddy
Me and the wife are looking to get another dog, and I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with American Bulldogs? We've seen a couple and the dog park and they seem like really good dogs and very similar to boxers in their looks and mannerisms. Any input would be helpful thanks.

Well, I don't have an American Bulldog, but good friends of ours have two. A male and a female (not a breeding pair, they are bro and sis and are fixed). Anyway, these dogs are quite pleasant. Although, I wouldn't say that they are like boxers much in terms of looks or mannerisms. Firstly, they grow MUCH bigger than boxers. Secondly, they do not have the stamina boxers have. My Emma tires out her buddies rather easily (in fact, the few altercations between them have occurred after Emma had worn them out). I guess that the females might resemble boxers slightly, especially if they're not standing right next to one another. The males are just so big that I can't see a resemblance.
I think ABs are prone to many of the same problems as other large breeds: arthritis, hip dysplasia etc. Also, they are headstrong and physically strong so would likely need a decent amount of obedience training. That said, I think they can be great pets. We love our friends' ABs...check out my gallery. You can see pics of them, at Emma's b-day party. At that time, they were only 8 1/2 months old.

Your friends AB are just too cute!! :)

I see what Weileys means by the AB "looks like" a boxer. The faces are similar. I dont think Weileys meant "exactly" alike but just similar (in their opinion) ;)

Good luck in your search for your new baby.

hello!
we are a boxer/american bulldog family.
we have a 2.5 yr. old female boxer, kneesaa and a 1.5 yr. old male american bulldog, buu.
we got buu at a little over a year old, his former owners weren't taking care of him and the breeder I had done a lot of research on (and was great! I might add) has a no pound clause in her paperwork you sign with her, she'll buy the dog back from you if you cannot keep it for any reason, so we drove down to PA to get our boy.
he has been just the best addition to our family!
he's great with kids and adores kneesaa! he is also the protector, he is very protective of the house, us and kneesaa.
he is a very big boy! we just brought him to the vet again last week and he weighed in at 105lbs. and still growing!
he definitely runs out of energy before kneesaa! but he has started to pick up on a lot of her playing styles, which is funny because he's so big and not as nimble as her!
I definitely reccomend going on the american bulldog assosications website
http://www.american-bulldog.com
they have a list of ab reccommended breaders, which are hard to find, like I said we drove from MA to PA to get buu, but she does all the testing, guarantees them for hips, health and temperment for life. she was great! I have pictures of him here:

if you have any other questions please feel free to PM me!
good luck!

We have a American Bulldog Ceasar he'll be 5 next month, weighs 106 lbs.
He has played both mom & pop to our little boxer 1 1/2 yrs. old, teaching to potty outside & how to raid the garbage when i'm trying to put it out for pick-up. The rest of our family is a rotty 7 1/2 yrs old, he watches over everyone.

We used to have 2 amer. bulls. but had to give the 2nd one back to rescue.
Found out when they get to be a about a year old they have alot of agression with their own breed. Ceasar was in the vets for about 4 days had about 100 stitches.

If you're interested in american bulldogs do research on the breed.
