anal glands

I noticed in another post that there was discussion regarding the expression of anal glands. Although Caasius is not having any problems, I thought I would ask what protocol one should follow in regards to the anal glands. Do they need to be expressed regularly? Or only if there are problems? Sorry about the topic, but no better place to ask then on boxerworld!!!

I believe they normally express themselves when the dog poops.

My girl had all kinds of problems with her anal glands, her poops were never big enough/hard enough to expell it on her own so I had to learn to do it myself at home. I could tell when they would start bothering her (alot alot alot of licking her butt) Sometimes it was 2 times a month but mostly once a month. Our vet told me what to do and said it would save us a heck of a lot of money to just do it at home. Its not hard, just kinda icky and stinky and it can shoot out pretty far. My new little boy has had a little trouble with his since his bout w/ coccidia and diarrhea. Since he couldn't do it naturally, due to the soft bm's. So I have actually done his about 2 times. Its not so bad.
