Hello everybody, I've been coming here ever since we got our first Boxer 9 months ago, her name is Sara and will be 3 in Oktober. My aunt, who's a vetrinarian saved her, but she was supposed to be put to sleep. We welcomed her to our home and instantly fell in love. She had a few behavorial problems because she was probably beaten a lot but she's become a lot better now.
Well, my father begun having some health-problems in April and in May he was diagnosed with allergies, to a number of things, especially acute latex allergies. The Doctor said that he was a little allergic to dogs also and the continued presence of the dog was causing his immune system to be more receptive to the latex allergies, in short the dog would probably have to go. My parents used to be farmers, had at least 2 dogs around at all times and it's only been 3 years since our last dog died and never any signs of allergies. So my parents weren't convinced about the dog causing it and have been avoiding the subject.
Thanks to me, the dog will now be leaving, argh!!! (me bad!) I'm allergic to my horses, I only get a little rash and it doesn't bother me much. So I decided to test if I was allergic to the dog. I stayed away from the horses and played with the dog. Lo and behold I got rashes and hives all over my arms. I've investigated some more and no matter how much I pet and play with dogs, I only get the rashes and hives from Boxer dogs!!! Yesterday, I went walking with my dog and we met a male Boxer, I petted him a little and I got even worse hives then with our dog.
This morning my father had to rush to the hospital, he had huge hives all over his body. The doctors are thinking of putting him on steriods to cut down his immune-system, this means that if he comes in contact with a bacteria or virus he has no defense against getting sick, but at least his body won't be killing him!
We are going to meet Sara's breeder tomorrow. She'll probably take Sara before the end of the month. We are lucky she wanted Sara back, better that the breeder takes her than she having yet another home that might have to abandon her.

I'm so incredibly sad because of this, especially since I, obviously, have pretty bad allergies for dogs, well Boxers at least, that might get worse with age, like my fathers allergies. I had always planned to get a dog when I had a family of my own, and after meeting Sara, that dog was supposed to be a Boxer. So I'm hoping for a "cure" for allergies in the near future...

Sorry about how long this is, I just had to share my story.

Wow, what a sad thing! I am glad that you are comfortable with who your baby is going to live with; that should me of some comfort to you. I too hope that you can find something to help with the allergy.....I wonder what it is about Boxer dander that you are allergic to vs. other breeds? Maybe you should post this on the vet board and see if anyone can help answer that question.

Our thoughts are with you!

OMG, that really sucks!! I would just go crazy if that happened....I am trying to think of what it is about a Boxer that would make you allergic to that breed so bad, but not others...I am at a loss! :( It sounds like you had found a wonderful breeder too, thank goodness! Well, I hope that the doctors are able to come up w/something to at least ease your and your dad's allergies! Please know you dad is in my thoughts.

Thank you both very much. We have a few theories on why it may be the Boxers that cause the allergies. First of all they have very short-cropped hair, and therefore it's easier for the chemicals from the skin to go into the air and rub off on things. Secondly, we live in a rather "cold" country and the Boxers might release more of the allergy causing chemicals because of the adjusting to the climate. ??

Well anyway it just sucks :(
I might ask the vets about it..

Asta, I am so sorry about all of your troubles. :( I really hope everything works out. I only have a second but wanted to tell you that I have 4 year old twins. My son has been dealing with a severe latex allergy since he was 15 months old. It affects EVERY aspect of his little life. In fact he even just reacted to his 4 year old vaccines because everytime the needle passes through the rubber membrane to withdraw the medicine for another patient it contaminates the medicine with natural rubber latex. Feel free to email me about latex allergies. My son see's the head of pediatric asthma and allergy at Johns Hopkins University. You may want to look into your father's diet because MANY fruits and vegetables cause cross reactivity to latex allergic individuals.

Sending you warm wishes,
Robyn

Asta, I am wondering if they have tested your Dad for food allergies? They can develop quickly because of his latex allergies. Some of the foods are: Banannas, Kiwi, hazelnut, chestnut, plum (prunes), cherry, passionfruit, papaya, avacodo, peaches, apple and celery. I am so sorry about your allergies, this is all so sad.

Thank you Robyn. My father has been tested for a number of things. He really doesn't eat fruit that much but I think he wasn't allergic to it anyways.
I have also read something about being allergic to materials in clothing as a result of latex-allergies, many artificial materials could hold properties similar to latex. We've been searching the house for possible latex-hide-aways. We changed our shower-curtain and won't let him sleep on any stretch-on sheets, then we were worried about the little-rubber things on his glasses. But it's just pretty difficult. A lot of household objects could have latex in them and we've been trying to find out.
The reason for my father getting latex-allergies was because of health problems he went through about 20 years ago. He had a lot of surgeries on his hip and thigh, he had an infection there and then a tumbor and eventually part of his thigh had to be removed. Well in surgery they use a lot of latex equipment and my father began devoloping a bad rash and hives on his leg around the wound. The doctors told him not to worry about it, it was probably just a little latex-allergy. Well now 20 years later he has finally been officially diagnosed with it and if he were to go through a surgery like that now he would have a severe anaphylactic shock that would probably take his life.
So it's been pretty hard enough for us to get to terms with this latex-allergy, let alonw having to get rid of the dog!!!

Asta, I do not have your email but if you email me personally, I can give you some address or numbers of places here in the states for info. I have a sheet from an organization called "lATEX ALLERGY NEWS" that lists household items that contain latex. You may have info similar to this but if not, please contact me.

Again, I am so sorry that you have to give your sweet boxer back.
