Advice for convincing someone to surrender their dog

I was going to put this in the boxer rescue forums, but it isn't regarding a boxer and the advice is for me so I am posting here. I have a mutual friend with a dog that they don't want. The wife never wanted him to begin with so after a couple of cute puppy months they just don't want to deal with him anymore. They've had a few good homes set up and when it comes down to it they change their mind the second he is supposed to leave. It breaks my heart to see him in this situation. They don't beat him or anything like that, but it is neglect. He has no basic training so now that he isn't a puppy anymore he is more than a handful.

Over the last year I have been teaching him sit, sit/stay and not to jump but I feel it is a futile attempt since they don't do anything with him so if I don't see him for even two weeks it is difficult to get back to the last point we were at. My question is they are against a breed rescue - I am looking for advice to give them to get him into a breed rescue to help find him a permanent forever home. I've got the number to the rescue in our area to give to our mutual friend today. If not, I guess my last option can be calling the rescue after they've brought him to the shelter and see if they can pick him up from there. It also breaks my heart to see him go. I have developed such a bond with him and have asked my landlord several times if we can get another dog and she just doesn't want one. I know he's not a boxer but he is a dog in need and I know him & Mason would get along great. Does anyone have any thoughts? I've got to give the number to our friend today or he's going to end up in the shelter probably tonight. Thanks in advance.

Do you know why they are against a breed rescue?? If you know why, you can try to convince them that a breed rescue is better than a shelter for whatever reason they have against rescues.
