Ace question...

I took Abbi to the vet last week to get her pedi (toenails clipped) and the vet asked me why I had "No Ace" listed in our file. Um, isn't it because it's TOXIC to Boxers?? She said that the sensitivity that Boxers have to Ace is more of an "urban myth" than truth and that she'll gladly abide by our wishes to not ever administer it to our pups. Then she asked if Abbi or Hayden's parents, or Abbi or Hayden themselves, had any issues with it. Before I knew anything about Ace, Abbi was prescribed it twice by our previous vet when she had her ears cropped without any visable side effects. And I never even thought to ask that question of the "parents" of Abbi or Hayden's parents. Everything that I've read about ACE specifically states that it's potentially fatal to Boxers and Boxer mixes, and nothing to the contrary. I've tried to find at least SOMETHING that states that it's okay to give to Boxers, but everything that I find says it's a no-no. Has information changed so that it's now okay/safe to administer ACE to Boxers and I'm just not finding it??? And I don't know if I should be a little concerned that the vet said it was okay to give it to them, especially because the vets at this particular office, and their staff, are known to specialize in bull-breed dogs....

No, information hasn't changed - your vet is wrong. There have been several boxerworld members who've lost or nearly lost dogs to that drug, and we're not talking in the dim and distant past either.

If she needs a veterinary statement (other than that on the American boxer club website), she can look directly at her handbook ov veterinary drugs which warns of the potentially lethal effects of Ace on boxers. Personally, I'd find an alternative vet than one who dismisses that sort of things as some sort of urban legend. It isn't.

It is right in the Merk handbook! I am done with argueing I just say my breeder said no ace...Hard to argue.
Better safe than sorry. I do not plan for one of my dogs to be the one in a million to have a negative reaction.
