Hi My baby Vinny had his ears cropped at ten weeks, and subsequently posted several times. The most recent time; however, the vet's staff said that he needed some second rounds of his initial shots ( he was four months old yesterday).
Now, the problem:
I dropped Vinny off in the morning, as usual, to be taped. My husband picks him up after work. When my husband brought Vinny home at 6:30, he could not stand, and was trembling. I immediately fed him, and he ate, but still wasn't coming out of it. During all of this I'm asking my DH what the vet said...why did they sedate him...how long will it last, etc... Evidently, Vinny was "too wild" to tape and he needed to have "an injection". On the bill, all the shots were listed as to type and fee, but the "injection" was listed as such, with no indication as to what was injected. As I am starting to cry I call the vet, and he says that he gave Vinny Ace and that he should come out of it by the time I go to bed. When I can't stop crying, he reassures me that everything will be fine.
The kicker:
He sends Vinny home with a prescription for Ace orally 10mg. per pill 1-2 AM and PM, prn (as needed).
Needless to say, we are giving benadryl instead. WWYD? The posts fell out day 1, and we have been using breathe right strips to straighten the tips ourselves.

I would not give the dog that prescription. Not in a million years. If you need to be giving the animal a sedative, there are plenty of safe alternatives. I don't understand why you'd even consider one that might kill him when there are so many alternative options.

Boxers have a known sensitivity to Acepromazine. We know it. A dog can have it once with no effects, but drop dead the next time. If you *must* be giving him a sedative to keep him quiet, why can you not continue with the benedryl or find a better vet who can prescribe something less risky? Personally, I'd find a better vet for the long term also.

Thats horrible! My puppy is the most higher thing I have every seen and the vet never had a problem with any of his tapings. On top of that if the vet knew what they were doing the posts would not have come off at all and especially that fast. I worked for a vet for two years and I know we would have never sedated a dog without consent from the owners. If I were you I would find another vet in your area that you trust to post his ears correctly! If you don't know of any start a new thread and try to find someone reputable in your area.

If your vet knew you didn't want ACE for your baby, why did he give it?!! I second the motion to find another and better vet, who knows that ACE can be fatal, and who will respect your wishes! Please let us know how Vinny is.

Ditto on the comments the others have made about Ace.

As for the ear posting. I would see if you can't find a breeder that can help you. It doesn't have to be just a boxer breeder, but a dobe or great dane breeder. They all tape the same. A breeder can show you how or do it. Please plan on paying them for their time and supplies.

Tranquilizing a puppy for ear taping is just plain old lazy. Sure they can be a challenge, but to tranquilize?

I am taping a 12 week old pup right now. And that is by myself. The taping doesn't look the best at times, but there is no reason why two people can't tape a little puppy's ears.

What I would do:

Find out the web or snail-mail address for my state Veterinary Board, and file a complaint. You vet gave care you refused, AND charged you for it, which in many states is against the law!!!

Then I'd find myself a new vet.
