Just wondering if anyone out there knows of a reputable trainer in NJ, or where I should look to find one? Or what questions should be asked?

I can't give you any references to good trainers in NJ but you might check with shelters and your vet to see if they recommend anyone.

Questions you can ask a prospective trainer would be:

What training method do they use? - make sure they use positive training methods, not forceful/jerking the dog around methods.

That is the main one I can think of, the other thing you should do before you sign up is sit in on a class. That way you will be able to see how the trainer interacts with the dogs and what methods they use and If you like the trainer or not(very important).

I hope this helps. Good luck finding a class :)

The method of training is important. Just in my city alone they have several different approaches to training the dog.

One class I looked into used training collars, one used chock collars, than there was just positive re-enforcement and a clicker class. Seemed like every place I called had a different method they used to train the dog.

I did a lot of research before deciding which way to go.

And which way did you go? And did it work?

I would definitely go with positive reinforcement. I do not like the choke collar method at all, and most books and trainors opt for the positve reinforcement method!

Where in NJ are you located? I am in Middletown NY and we have a wonderful trainer here. He uses treats for training and you eventually wean off them. I am currently in his class with 4 of my friends...we are all involved in Boxer rescue and are training our rescues to be Therapy dogs....one already started and two of us are going for the first time with our babies next week...I can't wait.

I am in Woodbridge, Middletown is no problem for me. I sent you an e-mail looking for more info, I figured it was easier than posting back and forth.

I would recomend you audit some classes before you sign up and talk to each trainer about their methods. My trainer does free evaluations to learn about your dog and explain how he teaches. There are a lot of different methods of training and personality of trainers. I love my trainer but my friends recently took a puppy class and disliked him.

The best way to learn about training methods and personality is to watch a class before you enroll. Good luck :)
