Yesterday I volunteered at a Fundraiser for preserving open space. It was held at a privately owned 22,000 acre ranch. This ranch is owned by a couple that owns several hotels here in town.

I was told that since I would be greeting people as they come in that I should take a map and give myself a "tour" of the ranch. I started walking around and came upon a rose garden, then a white picket fence with gate, I entered the little garden and was greeted by two unkept-looking dogs that were friendly. As I was walking across the garden, I saw a third dog and it was growling and barking at me as it approached me. I calmly walked to the house (the same direction I was originally going) careful not to acknowledge the dog. As it got closer it started a growling match with the other two and just as I was about to enter the house through a closed, unlocked door, the aggressive dog bit me in the butt! It startled me so I jokingly told the people in the house that the dog out in the garden bites.

I kind of brushed it off and as the day wore on, the bite really hurt. It didn't break the skin, only gave me a big bruise.
I just feel bad that I didn't voice what happened to someone in charge. I mentioned it to a security guard and he just said "oh, I see you still have your limbs." Now I'm mad at myself for not speaking up. I guess I didn't want to make waves and spoil this event for the foundation I was working for since the owners graciously offered their home for the event.
I was just perturbed that they didn't even have a "do not enter" or "warning" sign on the UNLOCKED gate.

I've never been bitten like that by a dog and it was unsettling. I guess i just wanted to vent because I'm mad at myself for not speaking up..... I'm also mad because I think they saw what happened (whoever was in the house) and didn't want to acknowledge the incident so they didn't even bother to ask if I was okay.

I would have said something and shown them my ugly butt bruise!!! HA!!!
Seriously, I'm glad you're ok. You probably ought to say something to them just so the next person doesn't get mauled.

Ouch! Yes, go back to the house, to get their attention, turn 'round, drop your shorts and shout, "Look what your dog did! $^$#@#%&*" Ha! I'm just kidding!

Seriously, that is scary, it is not too late to say something. If they ask why you didn't say anything earlier, you can just reply, that's because you thought that it wasn't serious, but you should say something, so that way they know to lock their dog up before giving people permission to enter their property!

Glad that you are okay and having such a good attitude about the situation. You seem to be a very POSITIVE person! Cool!

It's a good thing you're okay! It's a shame some people just don't get the seriousness of things like that - but their lack of response probably had more to do with fear of liability than not wanting to be bothered to ask if you were okay. Don't blame yourself - it's others ignorance at work here.

My daughter (who is 7) and I were attacked by two dogs last fall while riding our bikes in our own neighborhood. The attack was completely unprovoked and they even had to cross the street to come after us. Both of the dogs were going straight for my child and I stepped in between them and got bit on the leg (unfortunately, I had shorts on so I must have looked like a piece of turkey or something!) The bite broke the skin and bled and for a few weeks I had a beautiful (ha!) bruised outline of this dog's bite - complete with individual teeth marks! Once we got home, I immediately called the sheriff, filed a complaint, and the offending dog was taken away by animal control for a 10 day quarantine. I had to do something - these people lived 4 houses away from the local park and let their dogs run loose! Fortunately, the owners wised up and put a fence up to control their animals. But the bad part of this? Animal control told me if the dog hadn't broken the skin they wouldn't have been able to do anything about it.
