Mast Cell Tumor/alternative treatments
I have just finished searching the whole holistic care forum and did not find any info on mast cell tumors. I have been dealing with recurring mast cell tumors on my boston Mia. She has had since February '05 2 surgeries to remove 5 mast cell tumors and 3 weeks of chemo. The chemo was very hard on her body and it is not something I want to put her through again, but she is still developing new tumors. We (myself & her regular vet) are monitoring 2 new tumors recently found. She is currently taking benedryl & vitamin C daily (250 mg/daily). I also feed her on a raw diet and give her olive oil & salmon oil alternately. I am thinking of taking her to a holisistic vet for another opinion. Her vet & oncologist have not been able to help with the constant recurrence of the tumors and I am concerned on the toll it is taking on her.
Any experiences or information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Dora,
My Baylee has had recurring Mast Cell Tumors also, all grade 2. We have decided we aren't doing any chemo or radiation on her since she has a heart murmur (grade 2) and has numerous problems with her bladder & leaking. We just do regular rub downs to make sure we don't have anymore. There are 2 (I think) that I am going to have checked on Monday to see if they are what I think they are. Nailbitting I hope not! These are on her back legs by her paws. But I have been told that giving Vitamin C and Benadryl around the clock (1 mg per 1lb of dog) helps immensly! That is what I have Baylee on right now, not so much the vitamin C (Baylee can't have too much acid or ph in her urine so we need to keep it just right) but the benadryl helps keep the mast cells calm. This is what I have my girl on I thought I would give my 2 cents!

Having gone through mast cell with my dog, I just wanted to send lots good thoughts your way. We used Benedryl - I was told that it worked as a histimine (sp) blocker which helped slow down tumor growth. It was also recommended to treat with Pepcid or some other antacid (I'm sure there must be a more natural product but I'm sorry I don't know) as Benedryl can be rough on the tummy. I don't know any more than that. Best of luck to you and Mia.

flaxseed
Has anyone tried flaxseed oil-cottage cheese mix? Very powerful (check out the flaxseedoil yahoo group), people and their dogs go on living healthy lives with it after real bad diagnosis.
I'm trying it on my boy for a nasty paw infection, which has been torturing us all for almost 4 months now. I've tried EVERYTHING after refusing antibiotics and steroids, and four days ago I decided to try it. Was reluctant though, because when I tried flaxseed oil a couple of years ago with his food, he seemed to be sensitive/allergic to it (got runny eyes), but four days ago I decided to try it with cottage cheese since I remembered it becomes a totally different thing when you mix it with low fat cottage cheese (you really have to mix it so the oil is not visible any more). And guess what - the sores that bled and occasionally burst open and threw out yellow gunky stuff are turning lighter in colour (hopefully a good sign) and I think the inflammation has gone down a bit after just four days! I don't know if he is on the road to recovery but the paws have not looked this good in four months.
Before you try it, read up on "Budwig protocol", and joining the yahoo group (I think it was flaxseedoil2) would be good too. It's a 1:2 mixture, one part flaxseed oil, 2 parts cottage cheese. I'm currently using two soupspoonfuls of oil and four spoonfuls of CC.
Hoping for the best!

Thuja
Sometimes the homeopathic remedy Thuja (pronounced thooya) works for tumors. It's only about $8 at a health food store. You can put it in their water bowl.

Thank you very much for that tip. I am stumped right now, I still haven't been able to find a holistic vet in my area. I used the vet finder at the top of the holistic care forum, but only one came up and they have NOTHING available for over 6 weeks!
At this point I think I will have to sit down and do some net surfing for info, if anyone knows of some websites that especially helpful please let me know.

I saw that while searching the web. Let me know how it works for your guys. I also saw garlic & echinacea to boost the immune system. I am having problems trying to find a web site or really any information on measurements. My Mia weighs 28 lbs (weighed her this morning ) so I need to know how much I can give her and how often. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks.
